Media Entity

I'd like to use the drupal core media / media_library modules but these can't be enabled without either unininstalling media_entity 1.x or upgrading to 2.x. Is the media_entity module required and in what capacity? Do you see any issues with upgrading this module to 2.x if it is in fact required.
